A multifunctional building was constructed as part of a redevelopment plan of the area around the Breezand vacation park. The building has a footprint of 3,500 m2, and on its ground floor, it houses a wellness center with a pool, a bicycle shop, a café, and the park’s reception. A hotel with 40 rooms and suites is located on the upper floors.
This hotel is situated at the Vrouwenpolder dunes. When designing the building, the instruction to make it blend into the surrounding landscape as much as possible was a central theme. To this end, large green roofs were installed on each floor. Long blades of grass jut upward from the edges of the vegetation blankets. These blades of grass are visible from street level, giving passers-by the impression that the dune vegetation extends onto the building.

Our EPDM roofing underneath the green roofs ensured that they were reliably sealed. The roofing was installed by Daktechniek Allaart- de Kraker. Below the sealant, there is a dual layer of insulation at an inclination. The inclination drains rainwater into gutters at the exteriors of the roof boards. Enertherm PIR Insulation with an aluminium multi-layer lamination of 0.20 mm was selected to limit the thickness of the roofing. The dune roofs consist of drainage, substrate, and mixed sedum vegetation mats containing minerals and nutrients that have been planted with four different kinds of grass. By retaining water, the green roofs alleviate the sewage system and increase biodiversity. The vegetation also contributes to the pleasant micro-climate that envelops the building and the roof terraces. Especially during the summer months, the cooling effect of the green roofs will be very noticeable during warm and dry weather.
GPR analysis has been carried out to ensure the building’s sustainability. Scores of eight points or higher have been attained for energy efficiency, environment, health, usability, and future value. Due to this, the hotel was eligible for a government subsidy. The builders used sustainable materials where possible. EPDM roofing quickly comes to mind when a client requests sustainability. Especially when it comes to sustainability, EPDM roofing is light-years ahead of traditional products.
