EPDM Roofing: the ideal roof membrane for flat roof and lot pitched roofs

EPDM roofing
HERTALAN® EPDM roofing

Due to its unique product properties, EPDM roof membranes are extensively used as the roofing solution for flat and low pitched roofs. EPDM is the synthetic version of a natural rubber, and as such, has unique properties. The three most important characteristics of EDPM are: a proven lifetime of over 50 years, outstanding performance in the area of sustainability and the easy and safe installation process, without the use of open flame. EPDM membranes are naturally UV and ozone resistant, contain no plasticizers that leach out of the material, and as a result, remains permanently flexible.

These properties have led to EPDM membranes being seen as the ideal roofing system for flat and low pitched roofs, having been used for over 50 years worldwide. The last few years have seen exponential growth in market share.  This is simply due to the fact that the many advantages of EPDM roofing membranes are being made known to a wider audience. More and more professional installers and architects are advising the use of EPDM roofing systems.

EPDM roofing systems vs. bitumen roofing systems

The greatest counterpart of EPDM membranes remains the (traditional) bitumen roofing material. A perfectly acceptable product, but it cannot compare to the longevity, quality, sustainability and price of our EPDM membranes. See below for a small example of the differences between the two products:

EPDM roofing systems

✓ Expected lifespan >50 years (SKZ 2001)
 Naturally UV and ozone resistant
✓ Quick installation with prefab membranes
 Lightweight system (1,2 – 1,5 mm thick) approx. 1.23 kg/m2/1mm
Single layer flexible system, installed without open flame

Bitumen roofing systems

Expected lifespan max. 25 - 35 years
X Bitumen hardens when exposed to weather, wind, UV and ozone
X Crazes and ages over time
Base layer max. 3mm. and top layer 4-5 mm

X Multi-layer system, installed with open flame

The guarantee of prefab EPDM roofing membranes

With EPDM roof systems, it is possible to seal almost any roof in one go with prefab EPDM membranes. Working with prefab EPDM membranes means working with certainty. The EPDM membranes are homogenously attached to each other in the factory in optimal, controlled conditions. This reduces the number of joins, and hereby also the number of risks. There are less steps necessary on the roof, resulting in a quicker and more effective process to waterproof a roof construction.

The EPDM membranes that we manufacture are a so-called homogenous membrane; an elastomer membrane without reinforcement. We have been developing and manufacturing these EPDM membranes in house since the 1960’s. We were the first in Europe, and remain the only manufacturer of EPDM roofing systems and EPDM strips in the Benelux.

By choosing our HERTALAN® EASY COVER, you choose our EPDM membrane technique: quality, speed and convenience. Thanks to the hot bonding membrane technique, you are able to seal virtually every roof in one go.

When choosing HERTALAN® EASY WELD, you choose a unique roof cladding; specifically designed for mechanically fastened systems. Each membrane is 28m² per roll, the join is achieved by applying hot air.
